Calling All Hotdish Lovers: 1st Annual Hotdish Fest In Williston, ND
Hotdishes are a Midwestern culinary staple that epitomizes comfort food, and this fall, you can celebrate them right here in Williston! The Williston Downtowners Association is hosting their 1st Annual Hotdish Fest on February 22 from 1-4 p.m. at the Old Armory. Sponsored by the North Dakota Farmers Union, this event promises to be a delicious way to bring the community together.
If you’ve spent any time in the Midwest, particularly in states like Minnesota, South Dakota or North Dakota, you’ve probably encountered one of these hearty casseroles at a potluck, church dinner, or family gathering. But what exactly is a hotdish?
What’s in a Hotdish?
In its simplest form, a hotdish is a baked casserole that typically includes a starch (like tater tots, pasta, or rice), a protein (often ground beef or chicken), a vegetable (peas, corn, or green beans), and a creamy sauce (usually cream of mushroom or chicken soup). The whole thing is baked until bubbly and golden, creating a one-pan meal that’s as convenient as it is satisfying.
What makes hotdishes so beloved is their versatility. You can throw in whatever you have on hand, and there’s no wrong way to make one. Got some leftover Thanksgiving turkey? Throw it in a hotdish. Only have a can of tuna and some egg noodles? Yup, that’s a hotdish too. It’s the ultimate frugal, feed-a-crowd solution, perfect for cold winters and big family gatherings. Hotdishes have a special way of bringing people together.
