A Passion for Cats and Softball

Williston's own Bekka Johnson is a self-proclaimed crazy cat lady, and she wears that title with pride. Her love for animals, especially cats, and her passion for softball inspired a unique idea that combines both interests in a meaningful way.

The Idea Behind Pitching for Paws

It all started four years ago when Bekka was participating in the Williston Chamber of Commerce's Leadership program. Each participant had to complete a project, and Bekka knew she wanted to do something close to her heart. She also wanted to tackle the issue of cat overpopulation in Williston. That’s when the idea for the Pitching for Paws softball tournament was born—a fun way to play ball while raising money for local shelters, with a special focus on helping cats.

Making a Difference for Local Shelters

Even after finishing the Leadership program, Bekka kept the tournament going strong. In its first year, Pitching for Paws raised $4,000 for Mondak Animal Rescue’s cat room. The second year brought in $1,500 to support spaying and neutering efforts at the shelter. Although last year’s event was rained out, this year’s proceeds will benefit the cats at Animal Rescue & Retirement Ranch (ARRR).

About Animal Rescue & Retirement Ranch (ARRR)

ARRR, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Williston, serves as both a farm animal sanctuary and a cat rescue, shelter, and adoption facility. With over 50 adoptable cats currently in their care, the funds raised from this tournament will make a big difference.

Get Ready for the 4th Annual Pitching for Paws

The co-ed tournament will take place at the Western Star Complex on Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6. The deadline for team registration is Friday, September 20, with a fee of $200 per team, guaranteeing at least three games. Whether you're a seasoned player or new to the sport, there will be divisions for all skill levels, so everyone can join in the fun. And just a heads up, Pitching for Paws is a USA Softball Sanctioned Tournament.
