June Activity Spikes

In June, the numbers jumped: 204 calls for service, with 40 cats, 19 dogs, and 1 other animal taken in. Only 2 cats and 4 dogs were returned to their owners, down from May. But the rescue and adoption numbers improved, with 24 animals rescued and 13 adopted. Just 2 citations were issued.

What It All Means

June saw a higher intake of cats and a big increase in rescues and adoptions, despite fewer animals being reclaimed by their owners. It’s a reminder of how important it is to microchip your pets and check the shelter if one goes missing.

Stay tuned for July’s Fur Facts and maybe consider adopting your next furry friend.

LOOK: Here Are 30 Foods That Are Poisonous to Dogs

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet's phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.

Even with all of these resources, however, the best cure for food poisoning is preventing it in the first place. To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 30 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.
