Anticipation Builds for North Dakota's Youth Deer Hunting Season

With the chilly mornings, and the fall season just around the corner, attention is turning to a popular activity in North Dakota. You need to say this in your best Elmer Fudd voice...hunting season!

The youth get the first shot as the eagerly anticipated youth deer hunting season is just around the corner, commencing at noon CDT on Friday, September 15th. The Game and Fish Department officially announced this exciting event on Monday, September 11th.

In North Dakota, kids who are 11, 12, or 13 years old in 2023 will be able to kill white-tailed deer without antlers, and they can do it anywhere in the state.

In 2023, deer gun hunters who live in the state and are 14 or 15 years old will be able to hunt anywhere in the state as long as they have a youth season pass. Units 3B1, 3B2, 4A, 4B, 4C, 4D, 4E, and 4F are the only ones that need a special license.

It's important to know that the youth license is good not only during the youth deer season but also during the normal deer gun seasons. After the first day, you can hunt from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour after sunset. As a safety step, both young hunters and their adult guides must wear orange.

During the youth season, every young deer hunter must be directly supervised by an adult. However, the adult is not allowed to carry a gun or bow while in the field with the young hunter.
