Studies show that physical activity, and the resulting improved physical health, has a direct, positive impact on mood and general well-being.

You’ve likely heard stories about bikers, campers, and various sports enthusiasts managing their mental health challenges through the activity they love. For many in North Dakota, fishing has delivered the same results.

Whether you're a seasoned angler or a beginner, fishing is a great way to connect with nature and relax. Come cast your lines this weekend, and enjoy a day of fishing fun with Eckert Youth Homes. This is a free community event aimed to prevent substance abuse and promote healthy lifestyles.

Eckert is an addiction treatment center for adolescents, offering both residential and outpatient options in Williston, North Dakota.

Join them for "Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs," on Saturday, June 22nd, at Spring Lake Park. Both ponds at the park have recently been restocked. The East Pond is packed to the gills with 216 feisty Northern Pike. The West Pond was stocked with 510 Bluegills, 134 Channel Catfish, and 700 Rainbow Trout.

Fishing Teaches Resilience and Skill-building

Improving your self-image isn’t easy, but trying a new activity can be a great way to start. Learning a new activity comes with challenges, and success isn’t always immediate. However, facing these challenges and witnessing your own progress can be empowering.

Consider fishing as a metaphor for overcoming emotional struggles. There will be good days and bad days, but success lies in pushing forward, one day and one skill at a time.

Connecting with nature can help a person stay sober. Spending time in natural environments and engaging in outdoor activities such as fishing have several benefits that support sobriety and overall mental health.

Come enjoy a day of fishing and fun at Spring Lake Park!  Register now for Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs.
