Understanding the Meaning of Memorial Day

Here in North Dakota and throughout the United States, Memorial Day, Armed Services Day, and Veterans Day are reminders of the sacrifices made by our service members throughout history.

This year, Memorial Day is Monday, May 26, 2025.

Many Americans Don’t Know What Memorial Day Really Means

A recent survey sheds a disappointing light on how little Americans know about the holiday. Specifically, why we celebrate it. The survey found that only 46% of respondents knew that Memorial Day is for honoring military service members who died in military conflict.

45% of people also believe the appropriate way to observe the holiday is to wish a veteran a "Happy Memorial Day" or thank them for their service. While their intentions are well-meaning, more education would be beneficial for everyone.

Armed Services Day, (third Saturday in May): Honors those currently serving in all branches of the U.S. military.

Memorial Day  (last Monday of May): A solemn day to recognize fallen military who died in service. Wearing poppies is a tradition to honor fallen soldiers.
