Breakfast is one of the few meals where something as simple as an egg can reveal a lot about personal taste. With National Egg Day on June 3, a new study from Coventry Direct is cracking the code on egg preferences across state lines.
Egg Prices Across the Country
Finding affordable eggs has been challenging the past year to due a nationwide outbreak of bird flu. California is the state with the highest average price of a dozen eggs. Residents there are paying the most at $7.24, that's a whopping 50% above the national average.
North Dakota's Egg Price Snapshot
By contrast, residents of Washington state enjoy the lowest average price at $1.99 a dozen, 59% below average. Meanwhile, a dozen eggs is selling for $4.99 in North Dakota and neighboring states Montana, South Dakota and Minnesota.
How America Likes Its Eggs
Coventry Direct compiled a list of popular egg preparations and analyzed Google Trends search data to find the most popular egg style in each state.
Scrambled Eggs Reign Supreme
Scrambled eggs are number one search in 29 states, including our neighbors in Minnesota.
North Dakota’s Favorite Egg Style
Hard boiled eggs rate second overall, leading in North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming.
What’s Not Getting Much Love
South Dakota searches most for egg salad; the only state to do so. Shirred (baked) eggs and sunny side up are also not getting much love, ranking first in just two states each.
Egg Thoughts from the Studio
Just for the record, I enjoy eggs pretty much any way they’re made, but scrambled would be at the bottom of my list. Give me a quiche, fried eggs, or over easy any day. And recently, I’ve discovered a new favorite, Scotch eggs.
