North Dakota’s Chili Debate: Crackers, Cornbread, or Cinnamon Rolls?
Chili and Cinnamon Rolls: A North Dakota Comfort Food Classic
February 27 is National Chili Day—perfect for warming up during a North Dakota winter! While some people enjoy their chili with cornbread, I’m all about pairing it with buttered saltine crackers. How do you like yours?
Here in North Dakota, there’s one combination that holds strong in school lunch nostalgia—chili and cinnamon rolls. If you didn’t grow up eating it, the idea of pairing a hearty bowl of chili with a warm, frosting-topped cinnamon roll might sound odd. But for many people I know, it’s the ultimate comfort food. I guess if you think about it—many chili recipes already use cinnamon to add depth. Plus, North Dakotans love a good balance of sweet and savory (ever had knoephla soup with a side of caramel roll?).
A School Lunch Tradition
While some claim this is an Iowa thing, the truth is, North Dakotans have been enjoying chili and cinnamon rolls in school cafeterias for generations. The tradition dates back to at least the 1960s, when school lunches were made from scratch and meal planning had to be both cost-effective and filling. What better way to check off the bread and protein requirements than a big bowl of chili served with a fresh-baked cinnamon roll?

Schools across the Upper Midwest—North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and even parts of Montana—embraced the combo. According to the Smithsonian Magazine, records show this meal being served from Iowa to Colorado and beyond.
Why It Works
At first glance, chili and cinnamon rolls might not seem like a natural pair, but people swear the flavors actually complement each other perfectly. The soft, spiced dough of a cinnamon roll makes a great contrast to the bold, hearty flavors of chili.
The Verdict
I have to admit—I’ve never tried this combo. But given how many North Dakotans swear by it, there must be something to it. Whether it’s fueled by nostalgia or just a genuinely great pairing, chili and cinnamon rolls remain a beloved tradition. Maybe it’s time I find out what all the fuss is about—after all, today is National Chili Day, and what better excuse to dig in. I am curious, do you eat them side by side or go all in by dunking?
