With the Paris Olympics (July 26 - August 11, 2024) underway, Americans, especially North Dakotans, are gearing up for some serious TV watching.

Get Ready to Hit Pause on Your Life

While the world’s elite athletes are flexing their muscles and breaking records in Paris, North Dakotans are gearing up for a different kind of athletic challenge: marathon couch-sitting. That’s right, folks, we’re talking about Olympic binge-watching on a whole new level.  HostingAdvice decided to find out, surveying 3,000 sports fans about their Olympic viewing ambitions.

Did you know there are over 300 events in the 2024 Olympic games? From the familiar thrill of track & field and the nail-biting vertical challenges of sport climbing to the debut of breakdancing (yes, you read that right), the Olympics promise a smorgasbord of athletic prowess. And North Dakotans are planning to soak it all in, one potato chip at a time.

Going for Gold in Couch Potato Category

According to the survey, the average North Dakotan plans to spend a whopping 32 hours glued to the TV during the Olympics. That’s like watching every single episode of your favorite show, back-to-back, with extra commercials.

State-by-State Viewing Commitments

Some states are taking their Olympic devotion to new heights. Hawaii leads the pack, with residents estimating a jaw-dropping 98 hours of viewing time - four straight days of non-stop Olympic action. On the flip side, Montanans appear less consumed, planning a modest 8 hours of coverage - just enough time to watch the opening ceremony and maybe catch a few swimming finals.

Viewing Stamina: How Long Can We Last?

Let's be real, though. Not everyone is ready to commit to a full-blown Olympic marathon. Some of us have lives, you know? (Or at least pretend to.) But fear not, couch potato enthusiasts, the average viewing session is a perfectly respectable three and a half hours. Plenty of time to cheer, boo, and wonder how on earth they score rhythmic gymnastics.

Social Media Leads for Updates

Social media takes the gold for staying updated, with 55% of fans turning to their feeds for the latest Olympic news. News websites claim silver at 27%, while official Olympic apps and sports apps battle it out for bronze.

Ready for a Different Kind of Endurance Event

So, grab your favorite snacks, invest in a comfy couch cushion, and get ready to become an Olympic expert. Just remember to schedule bathroom breaks, because I'm pretty sure there’s no medal for dehydration.

And personally, I'll watch anything involving gymnastics and the swimming pool. The flips, twists, and incredible feats of strength and agility never cease to amaze me, and the excitement of the races and dives keeps me on the edge of my seat. I also have a special love for synchronized swimming—the precision, grace, and teamwork involved make it a mesmerizing event that I never want to miss. I can't believe how long they can hold their breath!
