We all know leaving kids or pets in a hot car is a big no-no here in North Dakota, especially in the summer, but did you know there are other things that can turn your ride into a danger zone? Yep, even the most innocent-looking items can cause serious trouble when left in a scorching vehicle.

That Innocent Water Bottle? It’s a Firestarter!

Believe it or not, that seemingly harmless water bottle in your cup holder could be a fire hazard. According to David Richardson, administration major for the Midwest City Fire Department in Oklahoma, the sun's rays can bounce off that bottle and spark a blaze inside your car. And let's not forget about the water itself. After baking in the heat, it can become a breeding ground for all sorts of nasties. Drinking that heat-soaked water could make you sick, so it’s best to avoid it.

Electronics Are a No-Go

Got a vape or one of those fancy electric scooters? Better not leave them in your car. The intense heat can cause them to explode like a Fourth of July firework.

Dangerous Everyday Items

And it’s not just the high-tech stuff—everyday items like hairspray, soda cans, and lighters can also spell trouble in a hot car. These items can expand and potentially explode, causing damage to your vehicle or, worse, starting a fire.

Food and Medications

Leaving groceries or medications in your car? Not a good idea. Food can spoil quickly in the heat, and some medications can become less effective or even harmful if they get too hot. It's always best to take these items inside with you.

Give Your Ride a Once-Over

So, the next time you step out, give your ride a quick once-over. Toss anything that could turn into a hazard in the heat. Your car (and maybe your life) will thank you!
