North Dakota Women: When Was Your Last Checkup?

If you’re like a lot of women in North Dakota, it’s probably been a while.  A recent survey by Doctor’s Best supplements found that a third of U.S. women are behind on important appointments, like mammograms, gynecological exams and yearly physicals, with anxiety being the biggest reason.

For younger women, the numbers are even higher—44% of Millennials and 51% of Gen Z women are putting off checkups. Other common reasons include cost (31%) and being too busy (18%).

I’m behind on multiple yearly appointments myself. It’s easy to put them off, but as they say on a plane: put your oxygen mask on first before helping others. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish—it’s necessary.

Forget Any Preconceptions About Who Skips the Doctor

It’s often assumed that men are more likely to skip doctor visits, but data shows that women are actually 35% more likely to postpone or skip healthcare visits than men. According to a Deloitte analysis, half of all women (50%) report delaying healthcare, with cost being a major factor.

What Hospitals Can Do

Hospitals can make it easier for women to access care. Dr. Kulleni Gebreyes, MD, suggests offering mobile vans, better clinic hours, and more telehealth options to improve accessibility—especially for rural women.

Delaying care often leads to more serious health issues and higher costs. Women are typically diagnosed four years later than men with the same diseases. Early preventive care is critical for better outcomes.
