The holidays are warm, fun, and full of family togetherness. They are mostly peaceful, BUT if you're not careful, things can get out of hand.

To help keep this from happening, I have put together a list of things to watch out for, so your holidays are nearly Hallmark-movie-perfect.

1. Wrapping Paper

Never wait until the last minute to wrap your gifts. Waiting until the last minute is ill-advised. Get more wrapping paper than necessary. It seems the wrapping paper rolls are getting smaller and smaller, while the cost keeps rising.

If you run out of wrapping paper, you may be, as my dad says, (SOL). I think you know what that stands for.

Look, if you run out of wrapping paper, and push really does come to shove, you can do what I suggested to my boyfriend. See... we just moved in together and consolidated all of our things...somehow, we've ended up with 10...I REPEAT, 10 rolls of aluminum foil. My natural instinct was to suggest we wrap our presents in the foil. He was less than impressed. I also suggested we use all our Thai food takeout bags, but he wasn't game.

My suggestion to you is to overload on wrapping paper. You will need more than you know.

2. Check In with the Old People

I guess elderly is the correct way to phrase this, but... You get together with mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa, right?

They always use the holidays to ask you for favors. The printer isn't working. I lost my password. I can't figure out how to get to Netflix in 3 clicks. While I do feel bad, I feel less bad after I've shown them three times and have given them written instructions in Ariel 20.

Get ahead of the problem on Thanksgiving or Christmas Day, so you're not acting as an IT professional on the holidays. Just check in. Make sure things are good.... operating... Passwords are figured out in advance.

3. Musical Chairs

To spare any hurt feelings and keep the awkward rearranging to a minimum, put together a seating chart before your guests arrive. Leave little cards by each plate, and you will avoid any bickering.

4. Painful Personal Questioning

It's inevitable; there's always one family member that has a knack for asking the right person the perfectly wrong question.

Did you just go through a breakup? -They'll ask you about the ex.

Did you just lose your job? - They'll ask you if you're still there and how things are going.

It's the worst.

There really isn't any way to avoid this; the questions always sneak in when you least expect it. Just stick to these key words: fine, good, and nothing new. --Yes, I'm telling you to lie.

5. Unsolicited Life Advice

Painful personal questions also go hand-in-hand with the unsolicited life advice. If I say "Wow, that's crazy" and/or "Interesting" three times in a row, that means I don't care and want you to stop talking. I'm here to eat grandma's meatballs, not listen to uncle Danny (whom I couldn't trust to work a microwave) tell me how to live my life.

My advice: tell them grandma asked for their help in the kitchen and go find a good hiding spot.
