Is It Illegal To Park In Front Of A Mailbox In North Dakota?
Lately, with all of the construction in Bismarck-Mandan, the roads have been a sort of free-for-all. Especially in Mandan. Memorial Highway is a mess, and I've literally just been driving through random patches of grass to get around closed roads.
In Bismarck, the parking situation isn't much better. If you visit the south Bismarck Walmart parking lot, you might find yourself wondering if people are aware that you're supposed to park between the two parallel lines, or if they thought they were just there for decoration.

Today, while on the way home for my lunch break, I saw a postal worker doing his rounds throughout my neighborhood, and it got me thinking: can you park in front of a mailbox?
I'm sure this is something we learned in driver's ed, but that was forever and a half ago, and I have long since forgotten.
To prevent a future ticket for myself and everyone else in North Dakota, I looked it up.
According to the United States Code, Title 18, Section 1701, it says that whoever willfully obstructs or retards the passage of mail shall be subject to fine, imprisonment, or both.
That sounds pretty scary. I doubt any local authorities will enforce this federal law unless one particular individual has been warned several times, and it proves to be a serious issue; blocking a mailbox still could get you reported to the police. I don't know about you, but I wouldn't risk it!
Since we are talking about parking no-no's let's get a good laugh in and take a look at Bismarck-Mandan's biggest parking fails of 2025.
