The overall cost of childcare seems absolutely insane. I was talking to a friend the other day and she told me the she and her husband wanted to have a couple nights out without the kids.

They asked around and found a 16-year-old babysitter without asking much about the rates. How much could it be? They hired her for two nights.

Cut to the babysitter arriving on their date night.

The babysitter entered the house and almost immediately asked them if her mom had told them what her rates were. They were taken aback by her straight-to-business attitude.

In any case, they agreed to her rates so they could carry on with their plans.

Two nights (8 hours) later, they had to pay their tab. They gave her hundreds of dollars. They were shocked. They agreed date nights weren't worth their left kidneys.

Question: Did they actually pay too much, or is what they paid the going rate? Is it actually fair?

You're not alone if you're hearing this and getting ready to start your babysitting side hustle.

You might be thinking our babysitters in North Dakota are just being outrageous. Well, that doesn't seem to be the case. The source also listed $18 as the national average per hour.

It seems 16-year-old babysitters have a firmer grasp on inflation and cost of living than the Department of Labor.

In summary, while hiring a babysitter might seem incredibly expensive, they might be on to something.
