Williston Basin School District #7 Superintendent Dr. Jason Germundson shared exciting news regarding the district's newest educational facility, Sloulin Elementary School.
According to Germundson, the general contractor is ready to hand over the keys, marking a major milestone for the project. While construction may be nearly complete, he explained that opening a new school involves many moving parts, including relocating staff, preparing classrooms, and ensuring students have a smooth transition into the new building.
Germundson also discussed future opportunities the district is exploring as it continues to meet the educational needs of a growing community.
Parks and Recreation Projects Moving Forward

Williston Parks & Recreation District Executive Director Joe Barsh provided updates on several major projects currently underway throughout the district.
Among the projects highlighted were the renovations at the Raymond Family Community Center, improvements and expansion at the municipal golf course, and the highly anticipated turf and ice project.
Barsh noted that these projects are possible because voters approved the indefinite extension of the 1% sales tax, providing the district with a reliable long-term funding source to invest in recreational infrastructure and community amenities.
City's Financial Position Remains Strong

State Senator Brad Bekkedahl was asked to provide an overview of Williston's financial picture.
Bekkedahl explained that the city currently has approximately $200 million in capital projects that must be paid off. However, he noted that many of those obligations carry interest rates of around 2%, placing the city in a favorable position compared to today's higher borrowing costs.
He also pointed out that refinancing debt at lower interest rates over the years has saved taxpayers an estimated $60 million, demonstrating the value of sound financial management.
Mayor Reflects on Public Safety and Healthcare

Mayor Howard Klug concluded the program by discussing several accomplishments during his time in office.
One of the key topics was the expansion of emergency services and advanced training for first responders. Klug noted that the enhanced capabilities of local emergency personnel have helped save 26 lives, underscoring the importance of investing in public safety.
The mayor also spoke about ongoing efforts to expand healthcare options in Williston, a topic that remains a priority for many residents and community leaders.
As he prepares to transition out of his role as mayor, Klug encouraged residents to stay informed and engaged in local government, emphasizing that community involvement will continue to play a critical role in shaping Williston's future.
A Positive Start to Economic Development Week
The annual State of the City Address once again provided a valuable snapshot of the progress taking place across Williston. From new educational facilities and recreational investments to responsible financial management and expanded emergency services, the message from community leaders was clear: significant work is underway to position Williston for long-term success.
The event proved to be a fitting and optimistic way to kick off Economic Development Week, showcasing both the accomplishments of today and the opportunities that lie ahead for the city.
