Medora really has something for everyone! Located in the badlands, you get the sights, sounds, and wildlife to make a road trip worthwhile. Downtown Medora draws with its wooden storefronts, the historic Rough Riders Hotel, and a distinct Old West vibe. Landmarks such as the Chateau de Mores, an 1880s hunting lodge built by French nobleman Marquis de Mores, are rooted in the town's frontier past.

If you're on the hunt for nature, and not many people, this is the stop for you! Outdoor lovers can visit the stunning Pembina Gorge 13 minutes away. Hiking, Pembina River kayaking, and wildlife viewing are available on miles of gorge trails. The leaves turning yellow and red in autumn make it magical. Winter skiing, summer mountain biking, and summer musicals are available at Frost Fire Park. Tetrault Woods State Forest, 1.5 miles south, has 592 acres of hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, and picnicking trails. Walhalla, North Dakota's oldest town, is historic. Learn about the fur trade at Walhalla State Historical Park's reconstructed Kittson Trading Post. Gingras Historical Park preserves Métis leader Antoine Gingras' home and trading post, revealing 19th-century life.

Bottineau sits so close to the Canadian border, you can smell the maple syrup! Surrounded by the Turtle Mountains and near Lake Metigoshe State Park. Stop and check out the beautiful lake and the trails. The town has small-town hospitality and many cultural and local attractions. Try Pride Dairy's award-winning ice cream or visit Mystical Horizons, the "Stonehenge of the Prairie." Visitors can take photos with Tommy Turtle, Bottineau's quirky mascot. Just a short drive away, the International Peace Garden has colorful floral displays and peaceful walking paths that symbolize U.S.-Canadian unity and friendship.

From prairie homesteads to general stores, this outdoor museum recreates early North Dakota life. The Victorian Dress Museum showcases Victorian fashion and craftsmanship with its exquisite collection of vintage clothing. Another notable is the Niewoehner Bell Tower, which showcases international bell-making. Downtown has Victorian homes, flower gardens, and peaceful open plains. Additionally, the Northern Lights Tower honors the gorgeous Aurora Borealis.

I will admit, I have never heard of Jud, North Dakota. If you're ready for a road trip, point your car southeast. It's south and west of Jamestown. Believe it or not, the 2020 census shows the population at just 65. Jud, known as "The Village of Murals," has become a picturesque destination with its stunning public art. The town's amazing murals on buildings, sheds, and homes reflect its spirit, history, and creativity.
