Working Two Jobs? North Dakota Has More People Doing It Than You Might Think
Every time I’m around friends or family, I’m reminded just how hard people work.
I think about my parents and how much effort went into keeping things going at our house. Clothes, utilities, groceries, gas for the car, it all had to come from somewhere. For a lot of families, that can mean working a little more to make ends meet.
A new study from SmartAsset shows North Dakota is one of the states where workers are most likely to have a second job.

North Dakota Scores In The Top 10
According to the study, North Dakota ranks seventh in the nation for the share of full-time workers who hold multiple jobs.
North Dakota isn't alone in the region. Minnesota ranks sixth, followed by South Dakota at No. 10 and Montana at No. 13.
If you're wondering where Americans are hustling the most, Kansas ranks No. 1, followed by Wyoming.
For many people, a second job can mean working an extra shift, picking up additional hours somewhere else or finding another way to bring in income outside of their primary job.

How the Study Was Put Together
SmartAsset analyzed data from the 2025 Current Population Survey and the 2021–2025 American Time Use Survey, using IPUMS data.
The study looked at workers ages 20 to 64 and considered several measures, including the percentage of employed workers holding multiple jobs, the percentage of full-time workers holding second jobs and the average weekly hours worked at secondary jobs.
The researchers note that the results are survey-weighted estimates and are subject to sampling variability. Nine states were excluded from the hours analysis because of small sample sizes.
So, if you know someone in North Dakota who heads to one job in the morning and another later in the day, they're certainly not alone. Across the state and the region, plenty of people are putting in the extra hours to keep things moving.
