North Dakota Health and Human Services is seeking public comment on the five-year renewal of its Medicaid 1915(c) waiver that supports medically fragile children.

Public comments will be accepted from Jan. 28 through Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Central Time.

The waiver allows Medicaid to cover specialized in-home and community-based services for children ages 3 through 21 who are medically fragile. The goal is to help families care for their children at home rather than placing them in hospitals or nursing facilities.

State health officials say the waiver is critical for families whose children have complex medical needs that require ongoing support beyond standard Medicaid services.

A draft of the proposed waiver renewal is available online at hhs.nd.gov/waivers. Printed copies are also available upon request.

Comments may be submitted by mail to North Dakota Health and Human Services Medical Services Division, Attn: Kathy Barchenger, 600 E. Boulevard Ave., Department 325, Bismarck, ND 58505. Comments may also be submitted by email to kbarchenger@nd.gov call 1-800-755-2604.

After the comment period closes, Health and Human Services will submit the renewal request to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for approval. If approved, the waiver would take effect June 1, 2026.
