What Candy Are North Dakotans Buying for Halloween in 2026?
October is here, and you know what that means. Halloween is just around the corner, and if you haven't started thinking about candy yet, you've still got time to get that shopping list ready.
But what candy should you pick up? Do you go with a familiar favorite, something chewy, or a chocolate bar that has been a Halloween staple for years? A new look at candy preferences from Innerbody for 2026 gives us a pretty good idea of what people across the Dakotas and Montana are craving.
And here in North Dakota, we've got a candy choice that stands out from the crowd.

What's the Favorite Candy in the Dakotas and Montana?
When it comes to everyday candy favorites, our neighbors to the south seem to agree on one thing. Both Minnesota and South Dakota have Snickers at the top of their lists.
Montana takes a different route, with Almond Joy coming out as the state's favorite. That combination of chocolate, coconut, and almonds apparently has plenty of fans in the Treasure State.
Here in North Dakota, though, we're going with Twix. There's something about that combination of crunchy cookie, caramel, and chocolate that makes it a favorite for candy lovers in our state.
Of course, liking a candy yourself and deciding what to hand out to trick or treaters can be two very different things.

What Will You Be Handing Out on Halloween?
That's where the 2026 candy trends get interesting. Innerbody also looked at which candies people prefer to hand out when Halloween night rolls around.
Montanans appear to favor Salt Water Taffy, while Minnesotans are sticking with Snickers. South Dakota is going with Laffy Taffy as its preferred Halloween treat.
And North Dakota? We're taking a different approach.
According to the findings, North Dakota is the only state in the nation looking at handing out Trolli candy.

That gives us a pretty interesting mix of candy preferences across the region. We've got chocolate bars, coconut treats, chewy taffy, and gummy candy all getting their moment.
So, as you make that final trip to the store before Halloween, you might want to consider what the neighbors are handing out. If you're in North Dakota, don't be surprised if there's some Trolli in the candy bowl!
And if you're the one handing out candy this year, here's the big question: Are you sticking with the classics or trying something a little different?
