Burping is viewed as impolite and obscene by many. However, burping has a necessary function and could be an early indication that your world is about to change.

The protective function of belching keeps the stomach from expanding too much. A small amount of air is inhaled each time you swallow, and some of it passes down the esophagus and enters the upper portion of the stomach.

That's not the only way burping can occur, though. It can be a result of your pregnancy.

One of the most typical early pregnancy symptoms is an increase in progesterone and estrogen, which makes many women swell up quickly and frequently results in pregnancy gas. Pregnancy is often accompanied by abdominal pain or tightness, bloating, belching, and gas passage, sometimes for the full nine months.

Why does it happen?

One of those pregnant hormones, progesterone, relaxes smooth muscle tissues throughout your body, including the gastrointestinal system. This causes your stomach to function more slowly, which gives your body more time to absorb nutrients from food and transfer them to the developing fetus. This results in gas during the first trimester of pregnancy and beyond.

Is it common?

This is one of those typical pregnant symptoms, particularly in the early stages of the pregnancy. The March of Dimes reports that nearly every mom-to-be will feel bloated at some point during her pregnancy (even if she doesn’t feel it right at the beginning).

What should you do?

Are you not a fan of bloating and gas during pregnancy? Eat frequent, short meals and avoid foods that can cause gas, such as sweets, fried foods, beans, and cabbage. Loose clothing will keep you comfortable, and eating and drinking slowly will prevent you from swallowing too much air (you'll employ this approach when feeding a baby). Yoga sessions are another useful tool for promoting calm. See your doctor before taking any medicine if your pregnant gas is extremely strong.

The amount of burping that is considered excessive is not strictly defined. See your doctor, though, if you're experiencing discomfort from burping more than normal.

So now, every time you get a little burpy, you're going to secretly wonder in the back of your mind if you are pregnant. Have Fun.
