North Dakota Winter Forecast Is Here, And It Could Be Quite a Ride

Summer isn't quite ready to give up yet.

There are still plenty of warm afternoons left to enjoy, the days are getting a little shorter, and before we know it, we'll be trading shorts and sandals for jackets and boots. Fall is just around the corner, which is usually when we start thinking about colorful leaves, football, harvest, and maybe squeezing in one more weekend outdoors.

But if you're anything like me, there's another season lurking in the back of your mind.

Winter.

And unfortunately, it's coming whether we're ready for it or not.

The Farmer's Almanac has released its long-range predictions for the 2026-2027 winter season, and for us North Dakota residents, we may want to keep the snow shovel somewhere handy.

Don't Expect a Mild Winter

According to the Farmer's Almanac, temperatures across much of the West, northern Plains, Upper Midwest, and Great Lakes are expected to average near normal overall.

At first glance, "near normal" might sound pretty good. It certainly doesn't sound like we're headed for some historic deep freeze.

But there's a catch.

Near-normal temperatures don't necessarily mean we'll have a calm or mild winter.

The forecast calls for fast-moving clippers, sudden cold snaps, and brief snowy periods, with milder stretches frequently breaking up the colder weather.

In other words, North Dakota could see a little bit of everything.

You might have a few days where it feels like winter has arrived with a vengeance, only to have temperatures climb and give everyone a brief reminder that spring will eventually return.

Get Ready for Some Weather Whiplash

For those of us who have spent enough winters in North Dakota, the forecast probably sounds familiar.

One day you're scraping ice off the windshield and wondering if your vehicle is going to start. A few days later, you're standing outside wondering why you didn't wear a lighter jacket.

The Farmer's Almanac says areas farther north across the Plains, Midwest, and Great Lakes could experience sudden snow squalls, blustery winds, and bursts of bitter cold.

That's the part that can make a North Dakota winter challenging.

It's not necessarily the idea of snow sitting on the ground for months. It's the sudden changes.

The middle of the country may experience frequent swings between thawing and freezing, creating rapidly changing conditions on roads and in fields.

For drivers, that could mean paying close attention when temperatures begin bouncing around the freezing mark. A road that looks perfectly fine one afternoon can become a completely different story after temperatures drop overnight.

Winter Will Get Here Eventually

Of course, we're still enjoying summer, and there's no reason to rush things.

There are still plenty of warm evenings to spend outside, summer events to attend, and lawns that need mowing. Fall will arrive soon enough, bringing cooler temperatures and beautiful North Dakota scenery along with it.

But before we know it, we'll be talking about snow forecasts, wind chills, icy roads, and whether or not the snowblower is ready to go.

The Farmer's Almanac's forecast doesn't necessarily point toward an exceptionally harsh winter for North Dakota. Instead, it sounds like we're in for a season with plenty of ups and downs.

So enjoy the rest of summer while you can.

And maybe, just maybe, start thinking about where you put that winter coat.
