I found it interesting earlier today that negative comments were directed to our local school board and superintendent about the fact classes were not called off today because of the snow. Granted, we got way more than what was in the forecast, and school was in session.

2 Hour Delay

When I went to elementary school (Rickard Elementary) we rode our bikes to school...In February...after it snowed the night before! The temps were in the teens and low 20s, but several friends and I rode daily and didn't complain about it. The motto back then, and remains the same today is "if you can get to school safely, see you there". If you, as a parent are not comfortable venturing out when it snows, that's your decision. Let's face it...today was not that bad. To put it into perspective, my job didn't shut down because we got snow. I mean, we do live in North Dakota, and it snows up here.

Here is the Williston Basin School District #7 Guidelines for Delayed or Virtual School Days District Responsibilities:

  1. Decision Making Authority: The Superintendent and/or Designee, holds the authority to determine whether to delay the start of school or transition to virtual learning due to weather conditions or other emergencies.
  2. Assessment and Monitoring: The Superintendent and/or Designee will continuously monitor weather forecasts, road conditions, and other relevant factors to assess the safety of conducting in-person classes. The Superintendent will consult with the Transportation Director to determine whether road conditions allow for bus travel. The Transportation Director will communicate with the Department of Transportation and Road crews in addition to personally driving the District roads to aid in the recommendation provided to the Superintendent.
  3. Communication: Once a decision is made, the Superintendent and/or Designee will promptly communicate the announcement to students, parents, staff, and the wider community through established communication channels, including the district website, social media platforms, and automated messaging systems.
  4. Instructional Planning: In the event of a delayed start or transition to virtual learning, Superintendent and/or Designee will work collaboratively with teachers and staff to ensure that instructional materials are accessible to students and that appropriate learning activities are provided.
  5. Staff Coordination: The Superintendent and/or Designee will coordinate with transportation staff, custodial staff, and other relevant personnel to ensure a smooth transition to either delayed or virtual school operations.
  6. Reassessment and Updates: The Superintendent and/or Designee will regularly reassess weather conditions and other factors to determine if any changes to the initial decision are necessary. Updates will be communicated promptly to all stakeholders.

The recent debate surrounding school closures due to inclement weather prompts reflection on the values upheld by our community. While opinions may vary, it's evident that safety remains a paramount concern for the Williston Basin School District #7. That has never changed, and I applaud Dr. Faidley, and the board for all their efforts.
