What would you do if $841.00 fell into your lap? Would you go on a mini vacation? Would you treat your family to a nice meal? Would you save it? $841.00 showed up recently for my dad. It was some unclaimed property that the state was holding until it finally got claimed.

Rick Rider from Bismarck's Townsquare Media cluster recently published an article describing the massive amount of money or property that remains unclaimed in the state of North Dakota. You can read more about it here. After I read his article, I thought, what could it hurt? I went in and started the process.

Unlock Hidden Treasures: Discover Unclaimed Funds from Your Past

Here is where the fun starts. After you enter your name, you click search and then wait to see what pops up. I did that with my name first and found nothing. I put my dad's name in and found some unclaimed dollars that were issued to him years ago from when we lived on the farm up by Grenora.

How I Easily Claimed Unclaimed Property for My Dad

Claiming the property was a very simple process. Since I was claiming it on my dad's behalf, the state required me to show proof of power of attorney and asked for identification for both my dad and me. The state also asked for some proof he actually lived at the address they had on file from where funds were to be sent years ago.
