Investing in local businesses is at the heart of North Dakota’s spirit – we all know these enterprises are the backbone of our communities. But with Veteran’s Day on Monday, November 11, there’s an extra meaningful way to shop local: by supporting veteran-owned businesses that could use a little extra recognition.

Veteran’s Day, observed each November 11, is a day of national gratitude for all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces, recognizing their courage, commitment, and sacrifices. And what better way to honor their service than to support the businesses they’re building right here at home?

Recent research from veteran experts at AmFi shows that veterans are leading the way in certain industries across the country. Professional Services, for instance, is the most common industry for veteran-owned businesses in 26 states. Texas boasts veteran-led enterprises across 10 different industries, and California is home to over 31,000 veteran-owned businesses.

But in North Dakota, our numbers are low. Only 926 businesses here are veteran-owned, making up just 4.85% of our business landscape—one of the lowest rates nationwide. Imagine the potential if more North Dakotans got behind these local heroes.
