Right now there's an animal crisis in our state; too many animals and not enough homes for them. Animal rescues across Northwest North Dakota and Northeast Montana work tirelessly to help pets in need, and these groups depend on community support.

If you have time, supplies or a big heart, here’s how you can help:

1. Adopt
Adopting a rescue pet saves lives. Our local rescues have animals waiting for a second chance. Visit their sites and socials.

2. Volunteer
From walking dogs to helping at events, rescues always need an extra hand. Reach out to see how you can help.

3. Foster
Temporary foster homes are always needed, especially for young, injured, or stressed pets. Fostering gives animals time to heal and opens space for others in need.

4. Donate
Rescues rely on donations for food, medical care, and daily operations. Check rescue wish lists on their websites or social pages. Every bit helps.

5. Sharing is Caring
One share on social media can help find an animal a home or get a rescue the support they need. Follow and repost from groups in your area.

Whether you’re in Williston, Ray, Stanley, Watford City, or Sidney there’s a local rescue that could use your help. A little support goes a long way for animals across in our area.

LOOK: Here Are 30 Foods That Are Poisonous to Dogs

To prepare yourself for a potential incident, always keep your vet's phone number handy, along with an after-hours clinic you can call in an emergency. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center also has a hotline you can call at (888) 426-4435 for advice.

Even with all of these resources, however, the best cure for food poisoning is preventing it in the first place. To give you an idea of what human foods can be dangerous, Stacker has put together a slideshow of 30 common foods to avoid. Take a look to see if there are any that surprise you.
