How Scented Products Can Stress Out Your Furry Friend
What’s That Smell?
Imagine walking into a restroom that reeks. Would you stay, or leave immediately? Now imagine if you had no choice. That’s how it can feel for cats in overly scented spaces.
Sick Kittens and Scented Blankets
Rescued kittens often arrive wrapped in soft blankets, but those blankets are usually washed in heavily fragranced detergents. To their sensitive noses, it’s overwhelming and stressful.
Scented Litter = Litter Box Problems
One common reason cats are surrendered in North Dakota is improper litter box use. If health issues are ruled out, the culprit is often behavioral and scented litter is a frequent trigger. It might smell nice to you, but to cats, it stinks! Always choose unscented litter.
Fragrance Isn’t Feline-Friendly
Cats hate artificial fragrances. These chemicals aren’t regulated for safety in pets or even humans. Essential oils aren’t better; most are toxic to cats. Cleaners like Lysol and Pine-Sol can cause kidney damage, and Febreze is a known neurotoxin. When I was shopping recently I noticed that Fresh Step brand of cat litter uses Febreze!
The Danger Builds Over Time
Even a single exposure can harm your pet. Over time, the effects of chemical buildup are much worse for them than for us. Pets show symptoms long before we notice something is wrong.
Protect Their Health
Pet owners in North Dakota should choose fragrance-free products, opt for unscented litter, and avoid toxic cleaners. Spread the word because what you don’t know can hurt them.
