Summertime Fishing in North Dakota Just Got More Exciting
Fishing Fun in North Dakota
People in North Dakota love to go fishing year round, and there’s no shortage of prime fishing spots. Plus, fishing is a way to create lasting memories, just like the ones I have from my time as a kid, fishing with my uncle Alan.
The Fish Challenge is On!
North Dakota is home to a wide variety of fish species, and ND Game & Fish works hard to stock water across the state for angler enjoyment. To encourage exploration of North Dakota's fisheries, anglers can now take part in the 2025 Fish Challenge.
To complete the Fish Challenges, anglers must catch, photograph, and submit a photo of each of 12 different fish types found in North Dakota. It’s a fun way to explore various fishing spots and test your skills across a range of species. Challenge categories are Classic, Sportfish, Rough Fish and Total Catch.
How to Get Started
- Fishing License: Get a North Dakota fishing license online or at local shops.
- Where to Fish: Lakes, Reservoirs and Rivers.
- Know the Rules: Check size and bag limits and be aware of protected species.
- Pro Tips: Hire local guides, check the weather, and consult local bait shops for up-to-date information.

Both North Dakota residents and nonresidents can complete the challenge. The contest ends August 15, 2025. With these tips, you're ready for a fishing adventure in North Dakota.
